It underpins security and defence, connectivity, climate and environmental monitoring, economic competitiveness, and the daily lives of millions of citizens. The discussions reflected this reality, focusing on how Europe can accelerate and strengthen its space sector in an increasingly complex geopolitical and economic scenario.

Several key themes emerged throughout the conference, including the rising significance of dual‑use civilian–military space systems, the imperative for deeper European cooperation, and the pressing need to accelerate progress toward genuine strategic autonomy. These priorities align closely with the objectives and milestones outlined in the European Commission’s Readiness Roadmap 2030, which calls for a more resilient, agile, and autonomous European space capability. They also reflect the direction set by the European Space Agency’s 2040 strategy, which is moving decisively toward shared goals.

Between 13 and 18 July 2025, as a GEO-Academy project partner, Eurisy attended the GEO-Academy Summer School 2025 in Sesimbra, Portugal, entitled “Innovative digital GEO-Tools for enhancing teachers’ digital, green and spatial skills towards an effective STEAM Education for Sustainable Development”. The summer school focused on exchanging knowledge and enriching the participating teachers from elementary and high schools from all over Europe with practical skills, tools, and collaborative strategies to effectively teach geospatial phenomena through innovative, research-informed, and student-centred approaches.

Through a range of lectures and collaborative workshops, the summer school focused on helping teachers integrate geospatial technologies, digital tools and climate science into their teaching in practice. To this end, different geospatial tools were presented, such as QGIS, Tracker App, OpenStreetMap, ICOS and many more. Learn more about the tools here. The different classes can be found on the GEOBSERVE platform, which was also presented to the participants. This platform, developed by GEO-Academy, hosts trainings and materials, as well as resources and guides to support teaching sustainable development in the classroom, available free and accessible everywhere.  The GEO-Academy consortium developed a guided tour of GEOBSERVE, available here.

The Summer School also aimed at fostering partnerships between teachers, students, innovators, researchers, and stakeholders in science-related fields, encouraging multidisciplinary collaboration on real-life challenges such as climate change, and innovations. One of the most distinctive features of the summer school was its commitment to bridging science, education, and innovation. Participants did not just learn about advanced tools like GIS, satellite imagery, or coding platforms, they explored how to apply them in meaningful, classroom-ready ways. This approach allowed to translate complex scientific concepts into accessible, student-friendly learning experiences. Teachers explored how to harness digital platforms like LearningApps, CODAP, PhET, and Tracker to support diagnostics, simulations, and interactive storytelling.

Beyond digital skills, the summer school emphasised collaborative, cross-curricular learning, and building a community of practice. Teachers engaged in hands-on experiments that integrated geography, maths, history, physics, and environmental science.

The Summer School was also about building a community of practice. Throughout the week, participants collaborated on the development of original “learning scenarios” that incorporated the tools and strategies they had explored during the workshops. Those projects, ranging from escape games to urban design simulations, were shared and peer-reviewed the last day, showcasing the power of collaboration in innovation. Those classroom-ready sequences can be found on the platform GEOBSERVE here.

This week aimed to bridge the gap between space and education, resonating with the values of Eurisy. In addition, Eurisy had the opportunity to talk with the teachers and space users, to discuss transmission and how space is essential for the future, and thus should be included in education. The participants coming from different countries, it also allowed Eurisy to grasp the different national contexts and knowledge of space capabilities.

“Malta to become a living lab for data-driven innovation.” With these words, Silvio Scerri, CEO of Xjenza Malta, opened the two-day conference Big Data: Space Solutions for Society, held from 30th June to 1st July in Kalkara, Malta.

Jointly organised by Eurisy and Xjenza Malta, the event delved into the transformative power of space-based data, highlighting how the integration of satellite data with AI can enhance accessibility and generate actionable insights across multiple sectors.

Mr. Scerri underscored the importance of making big data not only accessible but also interpretable, operational, and trustworthy. He emphasised the need for robust data infrastructure, interoperability, and capacity building in sectors such as maritime, agriculture, urban planning, and environmental protection, which are particularly relevant, not only in Malta, but across Europe and beyond.

The event served as both an awareness-raising and educational platform, bringing together local and international experts to discuss real-world applications and the latest developments in the field. A key highlight was the presentation of findings from a requirements-gathering study on the use of satellite data within the Maltese public sector, which was carried out in 2024 by Xjenza Malta and was also supported by Eurisy. The study provides valuable insights into the current landscape, revealing a significant adoption of satellite data and the dependence of certain Maltese public authorities on this resource. It also underscored key challenges, particularly those arising from limited interdepartmental communication and collaboration, and the need for targeted education and training.

Michael Quinton (Xjenza Malta) stressed the urgent need to bridge gaps not only between public and private sectors but also within public institutions themselves. In this way the idea of a unified data ecosystem in Malta could take shape, to break down silos, enhance interdepartmental cooperation and democratise access to data.

This spirit of collaboration and forward-thinking was the driving force behind the event, which saw strong participation from local public authorities and entities.

Francisco Vilhena da Cunha, CEO of GeoSat, also showcased how high-resolution Earth Observation data is delivering significant value to both the public and private sectors presenting use cases in Malta.

The second day, dedicated to European expertise, examined the market dynamics of space applications, with Emmanuel Pajot presenting findings from the latest EARSC industry survey. The data revealed a 10.7% growth rate over the past five years, driven largely by geopolitical conflicts and a growing emphasis on defence. The public sector has emerged as the primary customer in this evolving market. In such an ecosystem, fostering strong user engagement is essential—particularly to enable the development of innovative commercial data solutions. These solutions, often powered by AI, have the potential to enhance usability, support both providers and users, and also reduce overall costs, as highlighted by Graham Turnock, Secretary General of Eurisy.

The second day also featured presentations from experts from the companies Terradue, Oikon, and the University of Malta. The applications presented covered topics such as sustainable development, maritime monitoring, and urban planning. Professor Charles Galdies (University of Malta) shared his research on how AI and satellite data are being applied to estimate ocean chemistry and support environmental and climate efforts.

A panel featuring representatives from space agencies brought the two-day conference to a close, sparking lively discussions and highlighting key takeaways shared by both experts and attendees.

How much of a difference will AI really make in the space data sector?

While AI holds immense promise, we must move beyond the buzzword.
Critical thinking around AI techniques and their applications is essential. Understanding what kind of AI is being used, why, and how is key.

-Government Hesitation

Some government sectors remain hesitant to fully embrace AI-generated data. However, increasing transparency and clarity around AI outputs could shift that perspective.

-Need for Standardisation

Without clear standards, collaboration and trust become challenging. Establishing standards is key to enabling scalable AI applications, not just in space but across all industries.

-Trustworthiness of Data

As new markets emerge around data integrity, ensuring the trustworthiness of AI-generated insights is also becoming a top priority.

-Education and Collaboration

Two key actions that will play a big role in shaping the future of AI in the space sector.

SpaceSUITE is an Erasmus+ Blueprint project, aiming to ensure the development of advanced skills in space-related fields and the provision of education and training activities for Higher Education (HE) and Vocational Education and Training (VET). The upskilling and reskilling targets in particular professionals, entrepreneurs, graduates and students, which are central to the EU Space Programme.

The event introduced a comprehensive assessment of the existing skills and skills gaps in the space downstream sector, along with upcoming project activities. The participants heard from Tiiu Treier, Head of International Cooperation and funding Office at Enterprise Estonia, who introduced the Estonian space sector and the Estonian space strategy, setting the stage for the exchanges among local stakeholders. Maria Vittoria D’Inzeo, Policy Officer at DG DEFIS, European Commission, also presented the EU Space Policy and the role of skills, highlighting major goals of European Skills Agenda, and the close interlink between the latter and SpaceSUITE.

Consortium partners further presented their activities, highlighting their commitment to offering effective training opportunities for in-demand occupational profiles. They introduced a methodological framework to map space-related skills in education and professional demand within the downstream sector. Additionally, they unveiled the extented Body of Knowledge (BoK) and the first four personas, which will serve as the foundation for developing targeted training programs for space-related jobs in the downstream sector.

The panel “Assessing the Skills Mismatch in the Estonian Space Downstream Sector” highlighted the need for a comprehensive educational approach in EO, which should be inherently cross-disciplinary, as the current curricula often fail to equip graduates with the necessary multidisciplinary skills, which results in a skills mismatch. The discussion thus emphasised the importance of problem-oriented learning, integrated modules combining theory and hands-on experience, as well as closer collaboration between academia and industry with the aim to provide students with practical problem-solving skills using space data.

The opening featured Nicolas Schmit, Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, and Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market, who jointly discussed the importance of skills development in Europe in light of the new technological revolution, the skills shortage and race for talents. The Commissioners highlighted the importance of the Pact for Skills in the context of the European Year of Skills and presented the key points of the Pact, aiming to address the challenges that Europe is facing, including the possibility of different sectors to bring different stakeholders such as providers, companies and regions together, to identify the skills required, and develop e-learning programmes which will assist with upskilling and reskilling of the European workforce. The Commissioners further emphasised the need for the promotion of STEM education and making Europe a place where people can bring their passion and talents, and where a culture of skilling, upskilling and reskilling is fostered.

A thematic workshop entitled Attracting and retaining skills and talent presented the many challenges of attracting and retaining skills and talent. The participants presented some initiatives to address such challenges, for example, engaging and participating in conversations with new talents from very early on and present the many career opportunities in different sectors to the young people. As an innovative approach, making use of social media and awareness raising campaigns was suggested, as well as developing an understanding of employment needs of young people.

During the session entitled Maximising synergies between Pact for Skills and European Alliance for Apprenticeships, moderated by Anna Barbieri, DG EMPL of the European Commission, the panellists focused on the added value that their membership to these EU initiatives such as Pact for Skills brings to their work. Alessandra Frasetto, EU Policy & Project Officer at EVTA – European Vocational Training Association, explained that being a member of the Pact for Skills contributes significantly to efficient networking, as a Pact for Skills member gets many opportunities to network with various stakeholders and exchange good practices with them.

Andriana Sukova, (Acting) Director-General of the DG EMPL of the European Commission, noted that the skills shortage will likely persist, and that the EU is facing a challenge of needing to substitute retired workers and upskill new workers, with science and technology presenting a major challenge due to their need for highly specialised skills.

Andriana Sukova, (Acting) Director-General, DG EMPL, European Commission.

The Pact for Skills Forum was therefore a great opportunity for Eurisy to hear more about the challenges of skills and talent shortages that Europe has been increasingly facing, the need for upskilling and reskilling to ensure Europe’s competitiveness in the core sectors, as well as the opportunities for addressing such challenges under the Pact for Skills, exemplified by stepping and working together on the national and European level, which reinforced Eurisy’s commitment to continue its work on skills development in the downstream space sector.
