Genuine and impactful innovation must be developed with users and for users. This was the resounding message that emerged from a five-day innovation sprint during the ESA Acceleration Days in Brussels.

The ESA Acceleration Days: Accelerate Urban Green Transition was the second event in a new series of competitions which demonstrate the impact of rapid and open innovation to quickly co-create marketable solutions with end-users. The event was organised by the European Space Agency and Sopra Steria, in collaboration with the European Commission’s DG CLIMA and supported by a diverse group of stakeholders, including the Covenant of Mayors, the European Environment Agency, and representatives from the cities of Paris, Essen, Gävle, among others.

Today, cities and municipalities are under increasing pressure to become more sustainable and climate-resilient. However, many still find it challenging to harness space-based data and solutions to support this transformation. To address this, participants collaborated closely to co-create prototypes that provide urban stakeholders with innovative tools, turning complex data into practical insights for advancing sustainable urban development.

Seven teams from across Europe came together to create a tool leveraging AI to guide and support urban planners. The participants were:

FEV.io

BuildWind

LETO SPACE

LUP – Luftbild Umwelt Planung

Latitudo 40

AskEarth

ReImagine Space

Step by step, the teams were guided by mentors and facilitators, building a compelling story and methodology to develop a clear, comprehensive, and robust business idea and product. They were encouraged to adopt the user’s perspective, focusing on how the tool could best serve its end users. This step proved essential—not only for refining the tool’s features (such as which data to include), but also for understanding how the tool would be used and interpreted. Would it be available in multiple languages? Would it offer a simple, intuitive interface? Most importantly, would it effectively guide users toward making sound, well-informed choices for urban development in line with EU regulations and targets?

The Sprint concluded with final pitches hosted at the European Commission – DG CLIMA premises, where teams walked the jury through the journey behind their prototypes, highlighting the problem addressed and a commercialisation plan for further development.

The LETO SPACE team has now been invited to apply for an ESA Cooperative Agreement, valued at up to €100,000, to further develop this winning tool and explore its scalability and bring it even closer to real-world implementation.

Taking part in such a dynamic event, surrounded by inspiring people and ideas, was truly an enriching experience. It enabled Eurisy to genuinely serve as a bridge between space solutions and society, witnessing firsthand how these connections can be made in practice and experiencing the fresh perspectives and collaborations that are so vital in the sector today.

Mr. Scerri underscored the importance of making big data not only accessible but also interpretable, operational, and trustworthy. He emphasised the need for robust data infrastructure, interoperability, and capacity building in sectors such as maritime, agriculture, urban planning, and environmental protection, which are particularly relevant, not only in Malta, but across Europe and beyond.

The event served as both an awareness-raising and educational platform, bringing together local and international experts to discuss real-world applications and the latest developments in the field. A key highlight was the presentation of findings from a requirements-gathering study on the use of satellite data within the Maltese public sector, which was carried out in 2024 by Xjenza Malta and was also supported by Eurisy. The study provides valuable insights into the current landscape, revealing a significant adoption of satellite data and the dependence of certain Maltese public authorities on this resource. It also underscored key challenges, particularly those arising from limited interdepartmental communication and collaboration, and the need for targeted education and training.

Michael Quinton (Xjenza Malta) stressed the urgent need to bridge gaps not only between public and private sectors but also within public institutions themselves. In this way the idea of a unified data ecosystem in Malta could take shape, to break down silos, enhance interdepartmental cooperation and democratise access to data.

This spirit of collaboration and forward-thinking was the driving force behind the event, which saw strong participation from local public authorities and entities.

Francisco Vilhena da Cunha, CEO of GeoSat, also showcased how high-resolution Earth Observation data is delivering significant value to both the public and private sectors presenting use cases in Malta.

The second day, dedicated to European expertise, examined the market dynamics of space applications, with Emmanuel Pajot presenting findings from the latest EARSC industry survey. The data revealed a 10.7% growth rate over the past five years, driven largely by geopolitical conflicts and a growing emphasis on defence. The public sector has emerged as the primary customer in this evolving market. In such an ecosystem, fostering strong user engagement is essential—particularly to enable the development of innovative commercial data solutions. These solutions, often powered by AI, have the potential to enhance usability, support both providers and users, and also reduce overall costs, as highlighted by Graham Turnock, Secretary General of Eurisy.

The second day also featured presentations from experts from the companies Terradue, Oikon, and the University of Malta. The applications presented covered topics such as sustainable development, maritime monitoring, and urban planning. Professor Charles Galdies (University of Malta) shared his research on how AI and satellite data are being applied to estimate ocean chemistry and support environmental and climate efforts.

A panel featuring representatives from space agencies brought the two-day conference to a close, sparking lively discussions and highlighting key takeaways shared by both experts and attendees.

How much of a difference will AI really make in the space data sector?

While AI holds immense promise, we must move beyond the buzzword.
Critical thinking around AI techniques and their applications is essential. Understanding what kind of AI is being used, why, and how is key.

-Government Hesitation

Some government sectors remain hesitant to fully embrace AI-generated data. However, increasing transparency and clarity around AI outputs could shift that perspective.

-Need for Standardisation

Without clear standards, collaboration and trust become challenging. Establishing standards is key to enabling scalable AI applications, not just in space but across all industries.

-Trustworthiness of Data

As new markets emerge around data integrity, ensuring the trustworthiness of AI-generated insights is also becoming a top priority.

-Education and Collaboration

Two key actions that will play a big role in shaping the future of AI in the space sector.

In this picturesque setting, at the European Space Agency’s ESEC site in Redu, Belgium, a group of innovators gathered for a weekend to develop top projects for Europe’s security and defence using EU Space capabilities.

The 8th CASSINI Hackathon, organised by the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) and the European Commission, took place simultaneously at 10 locations across Europe, including Belgium, Italy, Ukraine, Slovenia, and the Netherlands. This year’s theme focused on enhancing EU Space capabilities for defence and security, with each Team selecting one of three proposed challenges to develop their project:

#1 Enhancing defence and security with geospatial intelligence

#2 Unmanned drone applications for defence and security operations

#3 Orbital security: navigating the collision frontier

The opening ceremony of the Belgian edition began, and Jean Luc Trullemans, Head of ESA ESEC, welcomed the innovators at the site, marking the official start of the hackathon weekend.

A matchmaking session led to the creation of nine teams, including three online, bringing together participants with diverse expertise and backgrounds to develop a successful and winning strategy.

The hackathon attracted a diverse and multidisciplinary group of participants, including students, young professionals, and experts. Among them were astrophysicists, environmental engineers, computational mathematics engineers, space policy experts, and business students as well.

As the evening continued, the competition started to take shape. Interestingly, many teams chose the challenge on drone applications, just a few the one about orbital security, and only one team tackled the first challenge on geospatial intelligence, and Eurisy found here the perfect fit. Initially invited to support and partner with the event, Eurisy soon became fully integrated into the competition as an active team member, gaining a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the hackathon, its participants, and the weekend’s atmosphere. From the very first night, the teams immersed themselves in developing their main project ideas, working until the early morning hours to begin shaping their innovative concepts.

Jens Goeree: “Before and during the hackathon I did not think about the chance of winning something. My main focus or goal for this event was to increase my knowledge in programming, remote sensing and GIS. Besides that, I wanted to make connections with other participants and organizers alike”. Among his motivations to join the challenge Jens named his interest in exploring the broader utilization of datasets in the particular field of biodiversity.

Carlota Buznego: “I decided to participate because my background mixes both of the topics included in the hackathon, environmental studies and geoinformation. It was a great opportunity to meet people from my field, learn things from each other and take a challenge”.

Working within a team of new people Jens considered to be an asset: “The main reason is that when you collaborate with a team of familiar individuals, there’s a tendency to stay within your comfort zone. As a result, the group tends to adhere to familiar practices and established teamwork dynamics.” Elaborating further, he explained that his team exhibited a diverse range of backgrounds: “In the initial phase, reaching a consensus on the model we aimed to create presented some challenges. However, once we established a shared vision, our varied experiences harmoniously contributed to the development of a solution”.

In contrast, Carlota described working with people who she never met before as a challenge: “Some teams knew each other before and they had a common goal for the hackathon, I think, in that case, for us, it was a drawback. We used some time to get to know each other and to focus on a common goal”. She however admitted that for someone who came to work individually like her, meeting new people was an asset: “The people in my team had expertise that was completely different from the ones of people I have worked with before and therefore, meeting them and working together made the experience richer as well as the outcome”.

We asked Jens and Carlota to explain the solution their teams have developed to the general public. “As a team, we developed a deep learning model to predict bivalve abundance zones in the Wadden Sea. This model holds potential for assisting policymakers in making informed decisions about establishing new shipping routes that would minimize impact on these zones. Policymakers also have the option to train the model with their own data for tailored predictions”, elaborated Jens. Jens explained that they used multiple raster datasets that were made available to them during the Hackathon. He enumerated the following (environmental) datasets that they used to train the model: sentinel-2, bathymetry, salinity, median grain size, silt content and exposure time. “For prediction we used the abundance dataset. The abundance dataset contains point measurements of the amount of bivalve individuals per square meter within the study region part of the Wadden Sea”.

Carlota presented their solution as a “integration of open data from the natural park into a digital twin whose characteristics and changes can be visualized via IR.Carlota specified that her team used open data from the open data portal of the Netherlands together with satellite imagery and data from Copernicus.

Reflecting on the take-aways from the event, Carlota concluded: “I gained contacts and met amazing people. I also gained insight into the state of the art and initiatives around the geoinformation and environmental aspects”. Jens was also pleasantly surprised: “Personally, I would say that it was better than I expected! The overall atmosphere was good and everyone was in it to learn something from each other. Furthermore, everything was arranged (food and drinks, workspaces for the groups, accommodations). This made it possible for all of us to focus on the challenge”, shared Jens.

On November 12th and 13th , Eurisy attended the 4th Italian Space Start-Up Competition (ISSC) organised by the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC). The scope of the competition is not limited to specific disciplines, it is as wide as the full space value chain.

Throughout the week-end students and young professionals had the opportunity to explore break-through ideas, interact with experts, work in teams, and structure them into feasible business cases.

Competition is an extremely powerful innovation tool, it favours a thinking-out-of-the-box approach, stimulates cooperation and creativity, ensuring the strengthening of analytical and critical thinking, prioritisation of tasks, and the development of new skills serving the achievement of the best possible outputs.

This competition offered to the participants a realistic test ground to assess the viability of their ideas and to form the next generation of astropreneurs.

After three previous editions, the ISSC moved to Naples, where about 20 participants with diverse backgrounds gathered to transform their ideas into potential commercial products.

Partners and sponsors – from Eurisy, Telespazio to AIDAA, DAC, IngeniArs, CNS and GroundSpace – have been asked to present how they respond to the challenges selected by the organisers with their portfolio of solutions, products, and services. Among the topics identified, special attention was paid to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the contribution of space technology to the fulfilment of the objectives of the goals, in particular climate change, less than a week away from the COP27 Global Conference.

Special reference was made to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to the monitoring of major pollutants deriving from road freight transport. Other challenges proposed to the competing teams concerned the monitoring of natural hazards and agriculture, to observe biochemical and physical variables of the land, such as temperature, nutrients, and soil moisture, among others.

Eurisy contributed with its own peculiar approach, challenging the participants to shift their mindset from a technology-development to a user-centred method, focused on a market-oriented perspective and aiming at addressing actual users’ needs. Through the presentation of three success stories on the topics of agriculture, disasters and climate change impacts in urban areas, we urged participants to engage in a co-design process starting from the translation of the needs into technical requirements and, eventually, into actionable information. Such a perspective was greatly appreciated: it allowed to understand how crucial it is to develop a dialogue with end-users to help them understand how space can help them meet their needs, providing them with additional elements to further develop their solutions.

Eurisy served also as a Jury member, and was asked to gauge the 6 finalist teams against a set of evaluation criteria, such as the team composition and the background diversification; the value proposition of their ideas, in terms of services and/or products to potential customers; the commercial approach/business plan; the clarity and quality of the presentation; the medium/long-term feasibility of the business idea; the topic awareness and their knowledge of the state-of-the-art of the identified market; and the originality of their ideas .

Each of the Jury Members assigned a special award to the team they evaluated with the highest score. Eurisy selected as its own winner the “Space Sleep Walkers” team.

The team, composed by 3 aerospace engineering students and a medical doctor, develop their business idea starting from previous medical studies that highlighted how astronauts on extended space missions lose on average more than 1% of bone mass per month developing osteoporosis and osteopenia. A similar condition can be developed on Earth by patients with serious illnesses, bone traumas or the elders. In order to help astronauts to reduce the effects of osteoporosis, the team came up with a solution that could be used in microgravity and, at same time, on Earth: the Space Sleep Walker. It entails two sensors applicable in the lower part of the body that apply a gradual compression between the tibia and fibula, and on the femur in an alternating manner…while sleeping! The devices activate during the body’s resting phase to ensure a smooth and gradual adaptation to the stimulations produced with no body stress increased. Such a solution aims at innovating through a space technology spin-off the existing tools to cure similar illnesses, testing them earlier in microgravity.

The final prize includes a mentoring scheme offered within the Eurisy team and the opportunity to present the Space Sleep Walker at a future Eurisy conference to boost the case, explore synergies with partners and, why not, find investors!

This fourth edition of the Italian Space Start-up competition was the occasion for many students to develop solutions that, in the future, could have an impact on the space sector. These competitions represent a great exercise to strengthen the start-up ecosystem, create new start-ups, and support astropreneurship.

A special mention in green impact went to the Choose your space team, including Carla Salas, Ricard Rodríguez, Fran Asensio, and Pavel Fedotov. They imagined a home search tool taking into account sustainability indexes, pollution and weather data that would serve as an intermediary for sales or rental platforms.

Finally, a special mention in business experience was recognised to the Byetech team, including Laura Domenech, Jonathan Domenech, Xavier Liso, Johan Oreel, and Dulguun Ganbold.
